  TASK  The Ss are to survey the favourite music and musician

  I.Teaching aims and demands

  1. The Ss can use the following words:

  Moonlight, sonata, poor, afford, knock, dim, blind, shine, brightly, through, silently

  2. The Ss can use the following expressions:

  Pardon me. to one’s surprise, lose oneself in

  II.Difficult points

  Using reflexive pronouns    Using the compound sentence.

  A recorder, some pieces of paper, some pictures

  Step One Warming up

  1. watch flashes of some music before the bell rings.

  2. Greetings

  3. Chatting

  The teacher is chatting with the Ss to revise the words “music, rock, piano, violin, pop” etc. and the expressions “Did you learn by yourself? Could you ….”

  T: Did you hear the music just now?   S: Yes, I did.

  T: Do you enjoy listening to music?   S: Yes, we do.

  T: What music do you like better, piano or violin?

  S: Piano. (or violin)   T: Can you play the piano?

  S1: No, I can’t.   S2: Yes, I can.

  T: Could you play it three years ago?  S: Yes. (No)

  T: When did you begin to learn it? S: I began to learn …

  T: Did you learn it by yourself?  S: No.

  T: Who taught you?    S: …. did.

  Step Two Language input

  Presentation

  I was not so lucky, happy as you. When I was at your age, I wanted to learn playing the piano, but the piano was so dear and my family was poor(not rich)that my parents couldn’t afford to buy one for me. Can your parents afford to buy you a piano

  Look at this CD.I couldn’t afford to buy one ten years ago, I think.

  T: Can you tell me the name of music that we heard just now?

  S: Yes (No)  It’s …           T: Who composed it?

  S: Beethoven did.   T: Who is Beethoven?

  S: He is a musician and composer.

  T: Which country was Beethoven from?  S: He was from Germany.

  T: When was he born and when did he die?

  S: He was born in 1770 and died in 1827.

  Have the Ss watch the screen to know more about Beethoven.

  T: Can you name some of his music?

  S: “No.5 Symphony”  S: “No.3 Symphony”….

  T: What piece of Beethoven’s music do you like best?

  S1: I like ….   S2: I like…

  T: They like …..,But I like The Moonlight Sonata best I think it is very beautiful. Would you like to listen to it? Please listen it silently. You’d better close your eyes and feel the music.

  Step Three Pre-reading

  Oh, you listened to it silently and to my surprise, all of you lost yourselves in the music.

  T: You enjoyed the Moonlight Sonata very much, didn’t you?

  S: Yes, we did.

  T: Why did Beethoven compose the music? Actually it was written for

  his love of Countess Giulietta who refused to marry him.

  Step Four  Reading

  1. T: Tell me something about the girl in the story after you read it.

  2 Have the Ss read the story silently and retell.

  3 Read the story again and try to know more information.

  4 Answer the following questions

  1)              Why did Beethoven stop outside a little house when he was walking in a street one evening/

  2)              Did the girl find it easy to play Beethoven’s Sonata in F?

  3)              Did the girl live alone?  4)What did the girl wish to do?

  1) What did the young man say when he heard the girl’s wish?

  2) Did the girl really believe her dream would come true?

  3) What did Beethoven do when he heard their talk?

  4) What surprised Beethoven when he saw the girl?

  5) How did the girl learn to play this music?

  6) Did Beethoven teach the girl to play his sonata in F?

  7) Did the girl and the young man like the music played by Beethoven?

  10)         Do you know why?

  5.Play the tape and have the Ss listen and repeat.

  6.Teach the new vocabulary: poor knock at pardon shine-shone bright-brightly and through

  7.Ask the Ss to read the story.(several groups)

  Step Five  Practice

  1.         Ask the Ss to say something about Beethoven in the story.

  2.         Get the Ss to retell the story with the help of some key words showing on the screen.
