Unit 1 What is a wonder of the world?
■ Warm up by learning about sentence components.
Hello, class. I am glad to be with you again. I hope you work hard at your lessens and be happy in and out of school.
To begin with we shall go over the making of a sentence. As we learned last term a sentence is made up of several parts. The subject comes at the beginning part. The predicative comes after the subject. And the object follows the predictive.
Look at the following sentences.
He (subject) started (predicative) a school magazine (object) last week.
We (subject) showed (predicative) her (indirect object) his new camera(direct object).
His diary (subject) made (predicative) her (object) very sad (object complement).
■ Listen and read.
On page 2 is a conversation between Betty, Daming, Lingling and Tony. Now let's go on to read it first. While reading, try to: cut/ the sentence into thought groups, study the predicative, darken the connectives and underline all the useful expressions. (阅读过程中,断开/意群,观察谓语构成,圈出连词,摘录短语搭配。)
Now we will listen to the conversation.
Useful expressions (有用的短语搭配)

■Make sentences with the expressions.

■Act out the conversation on page 2.
Now we are going to do something interesting. We shall try to act out the conversation on page 2 in groups. Who will be Betty? Who will be Tony? OK. Let's begin!
■Talk as they do. (仿说)
We are going to make a conversation of our own. We shall base our own conversation on the one we read and listened to just now.
■Change the conversation into a short article. (改写)
Again the conversation. But this time we shall do something difficult. We shall try to turn the conversation into an article.
■Close down by asking and answering conversation questions about school.

■Warm up by learning about the types of sentences
Sentences are grouped into types. There are five types of English sentences. They are:
1. He is my younger brother. He looks like my older brother. 主语+系动词+表语
2. He sings. 主语+不及物动词
3. He takes photos. 主语+及物动词+宾语
4. He showed me his photos. 主语+及物动词+间接宾语+直接宾语
5. He let us go at once. 主语+及物动词+宾语+宾语补足语
6. There is a natural wonder in my hometown. 谓语(there be)+主语+状语
■ Read the passage
On page 4 is a passage entitled The greatest wonder of the natural world. Now let's go on to read it. While reading, try to: cut/ the sentence into thought groups, study the predicative, darken the connectives and underline all the useful expressions. (阅读过程中,断开/意群,观察谓语构成,圈出连词,摘录短语搭配。)

■Draw a diagram of the article
A diagram is a simplified and structured visual representation of concepts, ideas, constructions, relations, statistical data, anatomy etc used in all aspects of human activities to visualize and clarify the topic.
Now we shall read the text once more to draw a diagram of it.
■Write as they do. (仿写)
We are to do something interesting. We shall write as they do. That is to say: We shall try to write an article similar to the one we read just now.
■Close down by reading about the Yellow River
The Yellow River rises on the northern side of the Bayankela Mountains of Qinghai and flows through nine provinces or autonomous regions including Qinghai, Gansu, Sichuan, Ningxia, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Henan, and Shandong. The river falls 4,450 m over a length of 5,465 km, covering an area of 795,000 km2. In its upper parts it flows through swamps and grasslands of Ningxia and Inner Mongolia. The river runs to the south before leaving Inner Mongolia to form the part between Shaanxi and Shanxi and, after a sharp turn to the east, it flows across the North China Pl
ain to the Bohai Sea.
